Pregnant Spore Review

Pregnant Spore is back on this cassette with five tracks of fast-moving harsh noise, very junky in sound and jumpy in theme. As with much of Rainbow Bridge’s output, the tape comes with a colorful j-card of spattered paint a la Jackson Pollack, with a numbering out of 50.

This cassette is really all over the place, and it finds Pregnant Spore doing what it does best – layering junk electronics, cutting away for a variety of warped sounds and pulsating whirs until the whole track finds a unified whole.

Side A is split into two tracks, the lengthy “Darn It! Jolly Scum” and “Satan Drape”. The first finds its rhythm almost right away, with a scratchy bass pounding leading the track while circuit-bent electronics and writhing strands of feedback often play at odds with each other. And although Pregnant Spore hits a lot of different tones with the noise here, he often returns to similar sounds, and it helps that the tracks are often rhythmically structured. A lot of screeches, tweets, and damaged sounds over the course of this side, although some do appear to be simply the effect of knob twists. There’s a really great vocal sampling of Gregorian chants, a transcendent effect of beautiful, human harmonies paired with the riotous electronics of Pregnant Spore, and “Satan Drape” becomes one of the best cuts off of Harmonious Salmon Hearts.

Side B is often similar, with “Snot Grass Pt. 1″ starting off with tons on swirled electronics color, crunchy static often deeply underneath echoes of distorted vocals, hectic electronic squeals, and overall just a generally insane noisescape. All of the acts often blend in, although “Vitamin F” and “Snot Grass Pt. 2″ do have their own distinct rhythms, and the latter features some nicely textured drums. This is good, though, because the blend means that Harmonious Salmon Hearts has managed to craft a pattern for the cassette.

I think most people know if they like the brand of noise Pregnant Spore works in. Sometimes abrasive, sometimes genuinely simple, Harmonious Salmon Hearts hits a lot of different areas of noise, but the continual factor of this tape is its squelching, warped sound, which sounds nuanced enough for me.

After this next lengthy transaction at the post office, things will be changing around here. No more super long waits for your package!

Due to:

work scheduling being all over the place
sleep scheduling being all over the place because of work scheduling
j-card misprints (Merzbow) and tapes custom-loaded with the wrong lengths (had to have many tapes sent and re-sent a couple times before they were correct)
financial troubles in the automotive department
financial troubles in the surgery department
transportation troubles in the automotive department to get to the post office that I always preferred using
stupid hours at the local post office (lunch breaks=the closing of the post office altogether, closing early before I can get to it, etc.)
old customs forms, their lack of carbon copies and the necessity of jotting down/photographing the customs form numbers for each international shipment before the post office cashier files away the forms
the post office the next town over literally telling me there is no possible way to track international shipments (LIE!)
the local post office not having anything to do with my residence because for some reason, my native post office is in the next town over and the post office literally 2 minutes away (walking distance) is not for my zip code
the local post office not having itemized receipts, just receipts with basic information, therefore I had nothing to prove/track/log shipments unless I made a list myself at the post office while being rung-up.

...things have been fucking WACKY as the label has grown.

I have done my best to stay on top of things and be extremely communicative with all customers about discrepancies (and I do believe I have done a great job at this). However, some of you are still waiting on things ordered in the last month. Everything is now packaged up, sealed, addressed, and just begging to be thrown onto the counter. It will be done when checks I'm receiving in a few days clear into the bank account.

I will be shipping every few days from now on or when your Paypal payment clears if funds are low and I have no buffer (usually happens when a brand new batch comes out, and the wait will then be only a few business days).

I am honoring any tracking/delivery confirmation/etc. requests from customers as long as they are willing to compensate for it. All packages are being shipped as Media Mail unless the customer requests otherwise. This runs the risk of inspection and stolen materials (which has happened) but I will not be held responsible for it in those instances. I will be able to prove that items have been shipped media mail in these instances now because of the changes I am making. Photographed or scanned proof.

This has the intensity and immediacy of a piece performed live. It's a interesting interplay on HNW vs. pure feedback annihilation. Like a balancing act of sorts. It's quite a ride, it takes many turns along the way and you are not sure of where it lets you off but it's totally worth it. Audio destruction in it's purest sense. You would almost swear that a Transformer was being tortured to death on the second side. It's a little on the long side but you won't notice. Limited to 40 copies.

Quite a confusing release. And if you know anything about Rainbow Bridge, it's that we are akin to confusion in sounds, art and projects. This anonymous Baltimore young man responded to my request to put out his first tape (in order to use up a random stack of eight c37s that were hanging around my stock room for far too long) with enthusiasm after I saw him perform at an extremely awkward show. He did this amazingly powerful new-age synth piece that would have made Housecraft or Deep Tapes shit themselves (although it pretty much bored the hell out of the audience to the point where the only people left were the chaperones and 6 other people. Yea, let me emphasize how awkward this show was.) He submitted his work to me fairly quickly after that night. To my surprise, he not only wanted to remain anonymous (his name is not Brandon Marshall nor are his initials WR) but he submitted only two synth pieces reminiscent of his performance. The rest of the material is made up of a lengthy and un-altered movie clip and the most calming wall of static and rumbling I've ever heard. I could listen to 12 hours straight of that piece and probably never feel angry again for the rest of my life.

White Dog/Pregnant Spore split review

In many ways it's not easy to pin down the music, from both of these artists, as any one genre or label - there are a multitude of styles and manifestations, and it's all the better for it. This limited edition cassette is a split between White Dog and Pregnant Spore, and they are very closely mirrored in terms of musical DNA, sometimes almost cloning each other to produce a very odd whole of other-worldly atmospheres and dreams.

Both artists riff-off elements of classic ambient Krautrock, amongst other inspirations, employing circuit-bending improv, experimental electronics and samples, as well as echoes of industrial noise, space-hop, tape-glitch and loop-drones. There is a synthesis of styles between White Dog and Pregnant Spore that constantly veers between the various musical borderlines, to create something unique, eclectic and weirdly unclassifiable, in this combined missive from the surreal, cosmic outer limits. The music is immediately attractive, with an assortment of styles and influences, but there are harsher, more challenging elements mixed in, to offset any listener nonchalance - a lot of the sounds are funnelled through, or accompanied by, an askew noise generator with discordant glitches, static, hiss and rumble.

Note: as all of the tracks segue into one another, on both sides, its hard to tell where one track starts and another ends, and the cassette cartridge isn't clearly marked, so unfortunately I wasn't able to definitively differentiate which side was by White Dog and the other by Pregnant Spore. In a way, it doesn't really matter, as they are very close in terms of musical generation, and just adds to the over-all enigmatic atmosphere of this release.

Side 1: (which I think is White Dog)
This first section incorporates Forbidden Planet/Louis & Bebe Barron type ambient electronics, blended in with the submerged echoes of a Victorian industrial machine churning away. Then we have Radiophonic Workshop/Space Invaders type bleeps and blurps, all mixed into the constant refrain of what sounds like a space-leviathan waking and yawning, in the background. Next, a syncopated beat takes over and takes us on a space-disco journey past the stars. A lot of these cosmic sounds are redolent of 60's/70's synthesiser/Moog electronics, though tempered by more post-modern, experimental elements and noise.

What seems like the second track on this side is made up from a dense strata of electronic samples, with faint vagaries of distant children's voices all overlaid with a cyber-machine wave-form, undulating in and out, which gradually subsumes everything else as it builds and throbs. This is straight out of a classic, 1970's science fiction film soundtrack. One is also reminded of similar ghostly nostalgia-reveries from the likes of Boards of Canada, though this is less melodious or 'pleasant' and seems less playful than that; it is more epic, austere and inhuman, creating a subtly unnerving tension and hence being closer, perhaps, to classic ambient Throbbing Gristle, or similar.

Side 2:
One strand starts off with what sounds like mutant crickets, chirping away, then phasing into a kind of soft drum & base beat, which reaches a crescendo of high-end hiss and then feeds into a dust-laden needle stuck in a groove. This transforms into robotic underwater voices, plus synthesiser-glitch, with deteriorated radio samples gradually coming to the fore, then the stuck groove again. Finally we come full circle, as the strange, squeaky insect banter creeps back, with all of these tendrils flowing in and out of each other, amongst a plethora of other bizarre sounds and rhythms, creating a circular template of shifting, deep sound, which constantly surprises and fascinates.

One side is the more 'ambient' of the two, with the other being more 'hyper-kinetic', but perhaps this is a simplification, as both artists veer between a variety of experimental modes, and have created, with this combined release, a beautifully mysterious and hypnotic spell from the inner-space landscape of weird, alien life-forms and galaxy-wide depths. This music is very visual and could easily accompany, to wonderful effect, an independent, avant-garde science fiction film. But, ultimately, an external translation through imagery would be unnecessary, as both of these artists, with their compelling retro-futuristic space-noise, utilise, amongst other talents, their cinematic sensibilities to conjure up an uncanny, cosmic landscape for our minds eye.

Justin and Andy make up a Baltimore duo called Lessons producing psychedelic noise with no limits. This release contains tracks from each project as well as collaborative tracks between the two projects.

In an attempt to experiment with new equipment, strange encounters and a slip into a trance-like state ensued. The tape was rolling and so was the manifestation of missing someone and something so much that it induced physical pain. With that channeled energy in these recordings, the two 45 1/2 minute pieces will pass by leaving the rest of the world behind.

Some-fucking-how, Justin Barger (Zombie Militia) was able to "remix" a bunch of unreleased Pregnant Spore material into some sort of grating, absolutely and undeniably violent walls of harsh, harsh, harsh scapes that viciously drone, hiss, screech and crush. And by saying "harsh" three times, I am referring to the shrill nature of Masonna and Incapacitants along with that saturated, thick, rumble of Macronympha. JB is an odd and controversial character. You may know him as "Jesus Faggot Christ" on a number of noise forums out there. His personality definitely comes out in his rework of Pregnant Spore's glitchy, mangled electronic sound.

Dementia And Hope Trails - Parts Of The Sea

A 2-part album of psychedelic ambience and deeply emotive soundscapes, all created with patience and whatever is remaining at the bottom of the heart in which this music arose from. Not one key from a synthesizer has been struck here. This album is full of (mostly) melodic guitars drowning in many effects to the key of letting go, letting the universe work, falling in love, and paying attention to every piercing detail as one's internal chemistry collides with the cosmos. This album destroys the ideology of Limerence, lights the way for genuine affection and illuminates it's depth. Reflective, meditative, reactionary, memorable, comfortable, cryptic. This is an abstract form of post-rock meets shoegaze guitar playing, rarely allowing the conventional sound of a guitar emerge with the exception of occasional "riffing" on which some sections of these compositions build. Slow, dense, shimmering drones and tastefully arpeggiated picking that sparkles as well as haunts. Loosely improvised, extremely focused, always knowing where it's going but experiencing uncharted wonder along the way. A brand new collection of 13 psychedelic compositions by Baltimore's Pregnant Spore, recorded in real-time with no edits. This is severely focused material, yet, at times, it may give the illusion of scattered and chaotic collages and textures. Centered around the theme of personal spiritual growth, Justin Marc Lloyd pushes his trademark "mangled electronics" sound to a new meditative level, all the while maintaining a degree of harshness and complexity in frequencies and movement. Inspired by the poetry of Dao De Jing and it's integration into every day life, Growth is simultaneously a journey inside the mind and outside the realms of the galaxy, all according to our own perception of reality. Although flesh, vocal chords and man-made devices were joined together to produce what you hear, they were all merely vessels in exposing an invisible world that already existed. This is something to get lost in because Pregnant Spore had lost itself in the making.

There would have been one more tape but it sold out at shows and on the website before I could even post this announcement. I have put more time, energy and money into this batch than I ever thought possible. It kept growing, seemingly by itself, and there are still over 10 releases I have waiting to come out. I told myself I would only release smaller batches from now on, and more often. That is not what ended up happening, of course. I know it is overwhelming, and I apologize. But I am proud to be releasing what you see here. It's such a relief as well as a very exciting accomplishment. 15 tracks of concussion and resentment. A year's worth of sound collage dilapidated and uncared-for, pieced together and dubbed to tape. Dismantled and remixed recordings of instruments, traffic, extreme weather, animals, paper ripping, plastic crinkling, thumbtacks being dropped, voices, household appliances, speeches, performance art, various objects being rattled and scraped... static, buzz, beeps, cuts, punches, squeezes and squeals. Despite the project name, none of this was performed live. This is a compilation of pieces that took months to put together.

If you're familiar with those other projects, this is nothing like them. This is actually very calming and meditative with a hint of doom and gloom. Really great stuff! These are pro-dubbed with full color artwork.
